Now that Marathon training is over, there is not much to say! I am still running (although a took about a week and a half break after the Marathon) and doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. I am on Day 17 in a row.
It's tough! It's not as tough as P90X, but I didn't expect it to be. I like that it is only 20 minutes, but you can get a great workout.
I may go back to P90X after Shred is over, I just couldn't commit to it so soon after the Marathon. It takes a lot of motivation and the schedule is grueling and I just wasn't ready for that yet!

My First Marathon
It started on Friday night. I went to the downtown convention center to pick up my race packet. I started seeing all the signs of the Marathon and got really excited and also nervous! Wow, I am really going to be running this in 2 days! After picking up my packet I was walking around the expo and saw a black running bag. I decided to buy it because I didn't know where I was going to put my keys, GU, etc. I tried it on and it was pretty comfortable and I bought it. I was really glad I did because I needed it!
I was wound pretty tight at this point. I hadn't had a drink all week because I didn't want to be dehydrated. Friday is always pizza night at our house, so I stopped and picked up a pizza. I was drooling looking at the ice cold beer! So I bought a 40 oz. Miller Lite (I haven't had one of those since high school LOL!) and decided that I was going to drink it Friday night. Man, that beer tasted good! And it relaxed me and I slept well Friday night.
Saturday I woke up to my period. Fucking great! My 2nd day is always the worst so I was extremely annoyed, but what could I do? What kind of luck is that to get your period for you first marathon? LOL!
Brayden had soccer practice and I made pasta and chicken for dinner. I wanted to be inspired, so me and Bobby watched Spirit of the Marathon. I tried to go to bed at 9:30 but I was so wound up and nervous that I could not sleep. The last time I looked at the clock it said 1:00 a.m. and I had to get up at 4:00 a.m. I hoped that this was normal and wouldn't affect me too much.
My alarm went off at 4:00 but I didn't get up until 4:30. I had some coffee (just one cup), ate a bagel with peanut butter, gathered my belongings and headed to Pittsburgh. I have never participated in a big marathon, only small ones so I was blown away by the excitement and all the people! I was pumped. I met the charity group I was running for, got a few pictures, and made a last pee break. I got into the end of the line for the marathon because I knew I was looking at least a 5 hour finish. I had trained enough to finish but not to be competitive.
I cannot say enough about the people of Pittsburgh. The fan support was so amazing! At mile six our Mayor Luke Rahvenstahl gave me a high five. It was definitely a high point during the race! I had to take my first pee break at mile 7 and had to wait in line. This annoyed me very much but I had to go. I was off again....it started raining at mile 9. I don't like to run in the rain, but it wasn't too bad. My shoes and my Terrible Towel got soaked. Yes, I carried my towel throughout the whole race! After mile 13, but right foot kept cramping up and going numb. I had to take my shoe off a few times. There was a huge hill right around 13.2 which I thought was really cruel! But I got through it.
I was doing okay until about mile 20. I was getting pretty exhausted by this point! Then I heard my name being called and saw my husband, son, Dad and Sister. I was never so happy to see them! That really perked me up. My husband later told me that he intended to see me at that point because he knew I would be struggling. 20 miles was the longest training run that I had done.
Miles 21-25 were quite brutal. I.HURT.EVERYWHERE. I had to walk and run throughout those miles. But at that time I was going through the worst part of the city, but the fans were the greatest! I had a bunch of little kids high fiving me, and women cheering me on. I didn't have my name on my shirt but since I had my terrible towel, they were screaming "GO STEELER GIRL!" At mile 23 a very elderly woman in a wheelchair told me that I still looked sexy. That made me laugh out loud! I don't care who you are, that's funny!
I had made a few friends by mile 25 and one of the girls was running her 3rd marathon, so that made me feel a little bit better! She started walking along with another girl I met, but I was ready to run. The adrenaline was pumping!
I got to mile 26 and I saw my family again. My little boy ran along with me to the finish line...it was so incredibly sweet! There were no tears. I was just so happy to be finished that I couldn't get the freaking smile off my face!
All in all, it was a great first marathon experience, lots of up and downs, but I am glad that I held out and ran it in Pittsburgh. It was truly an awesome experience! It was a lot of fun running with all those people after 4 lonely months of training alone!

Sunday Morning Run
I did a really nice 5 mile run this morning. The weather was perfect, it was 68 degrees.
I didn't take any gadgets with me, no Garmin or heart rate monitor. Okay, so I took my ipod! I just wanted to go out and run for the joy of running! And get back to why I like to run. When I am in training mode, it's just not that fun and it was starting to feel like a second job.
One more week until the marathon!

I'm in a boot...

So I decide to make an appt. with the Sports Medicine Dr. for peace of mind. My hope was that she would say "it's just shin splints" and send me on my way.
Well, I guess she saw an abnormality in the x-ray so she sent me for an MRI yesterday and put me in this lovely boot.

I probably won't have any answers until tomorrow about whether or not I am going to be able to run the marathon. I haven't counted myself out yet, but I am prepared if I can't run it.
It would be very disappointing if I couldn't run it, but I know it's not my fault. I didn't overtrain. I did everything I was supposed to. My only regret right now is that maybe I shouldn't have done the 30k for my first marathon. That probably wasn't a good idea.
Oh well, live and learn. I will run it next year if I can't do it this year! I still want Pittsburgh to be my first marathon experience.

13 Days Away for the Marathon
And I'm still in pain. I've been dealing with a nagging leg injury since my 20 mile run. I've not run much since then.
My chiropractor did an xray, which did not show a stress fracture. However, they do not always show up in xrays. But there is no time for an MRI, I just have to pray and hope for the best!
I am doing this marathon, whether or not I have to crawl to the finish line. I've worked too hard to give up now.

I did it! The last long run...20 miles
Of course I couldn't sleep last night because I knew I had to get up early to do this 20 miler. And when I finally did get to sleep, I was awoken by the doorbell. My husband had locked my son out of the house! I wanted to smack my husband, but he was snoring away beside me...grr!
Anyhow, I got up at 6 to start the process: eating oatmeal, stretching, body glide, heart rate montitor, garmin, ipod, etc! It is a process! I finally got out of the house @ 6:30. My hip was bothering me, so I knew I was out of alignment. Well what could I do at this point but just go. I knew there would be consequences (there were).
It was raining pretty hard and was pretty cold so I wore a hat and a jacket. I hate wearing jackets for long runs, hate it! The jacket came off at mile 5 and I had some water and a GU. I tried to think of this run in 5 mile increments, because if you look at the big picture it seems impossible and daunting.
Things went pretty well until about mile 15, the front of my right ankle really started to hurt. I believe it is from me being out of alignment, I could tell that my hips were off, which messes everything else up.
Well there was no way I was quitting until that garmin said 20 miles! I sort of limped/ran the last few miles, but I did it. I wasn't fun but I didn't expect it to be...LOL
The next time I do 20 miles, hopefully there will be a medal at the end! :)

It was not pretty....
but I did it! Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, did.
It started out Friday night with Brayden being sick. Bobby got up to take care of him, but kids want their Mommy when they are sick. He had a little stomach bug and it was coming out of both ends. I contemplated not even going to the race, due to Mommy Guilt. But Bobby said to go, he would be fine.
I felt very tired and a little "off". Then I did something I never do, I had a fat free cappuccino on the way to the race. It was a good hour drive, and I felt like I could barely keep my eyes open so I stopped to get one, knowing full well it was going to haunt me later (it did).
I finally get to the race and get my time chip. I make one last potty break before the race, and I got my period. Oh fucking great! And I didn't even have anything. No wonder I felt "off". So I just hoped for the best and got in line with the other 30k peeps. I am having full blown cramping at this point.
The first mile went up a humongous hill. Are you kidding me? There is no way I can do this. I was like "please God, don't let it be like this the whole way". It wasn't. The course was pretty flat after that. There were many bathroom breaks due to the coffee. I knew that effer was going to come back to haunt me! I started having stomach issues at mile 11, not sure what from...great.
Anyhow, there was also a half marathon, I cannot tell you how much I wanted to stop there!! Most of the people were doing the half marathon. I was so jealous that they were done and it took everything I had to run past the finish line to continue on to 18.6 miles.
But the end finally came and I was done.....yes!! I was nauseated and tired and just wanted to get home! I was on the turnpike heading home and there was an accident that had traffic in a stand still. Are you fucking kidding me? My legs are screaming here! Thank God I at least had water in the car. I turned the car off, put back the seat and tried to rest.
I stopped to get beer on the way home (oh yes I earned those beers!) and I could barely walk to get it! Some nice young man got my beer for me and took it to the car. What a sweetheart he was!
I came home, got a shower because I stunk to the high heavens, played with Brayden a little (he was feeling better) and crashed on the couch. I tried to watch the Pitt game, but I literally could not keep my eyes open!

I did it! My longest run thus far...
Yeah, it wasn't fun and it wasn't pretty, but I did it. Honesty, it was a fucking mind game. I got up at 6:00 after a crappy night's sleep so I could get started early. I throw on some running pants, a short sleeved underarmour and a sweatshirt and head out.
I'm in the car and see the temperature is 18 degrees. Shit! I kept on heading towards the trail. Well, let me tell you it was COLD. I just kept running, thinking it would get better the longer I run. Wrong. By mile 6 my legs were so numb that I couldn't even feel them anymore.
So I have no choice but to head home and get some thermal underwear on. I grab a half a banana on the way out and head back to the trails.
It was really tough to get started again! I kept thinking "fuck this, I can't do this today". I was still freezing and I couldn't get warm. So I turn around and head towards the car. Miraculously, on the way back, I start to feel better.
So I continue and it actually was a pretty nice run. I had a Clif Shot @ mile 10. I didn't have to take any bathroom breaks this time and the rest of the run was smooth. I am glad it's over and I plan on drinking some beers tonight!

My Longest Run on My Own
Happened last night......I thought my husband was going to have to work today, so I was set on doing it last night. I really don't like to run at night, especially on a Friday night! I am usually worn out by then. I like morning runs when I am fresh.
Besides having to go to the bathroom at mile 3, all went well until about mile 11. I started getting really tired and it was dark and I was sick of running!! But I kept pushing through and finally finished. I was pretty sore so I stopped and got some ice and had an ice bath when I got home. It felt surprisingly good!
I just worry that if I am feeling pain now, how am I going to feel when I have to run twice that distance? I really hope I have it in me to do it! I have already popped Ibuprofen this morning.

Running for 2 hours on a Friday Night...
Is NOT my idea of a good time...LMAO! I have a very busy weekend so it had to be done. I left work and chowed down a protein bar on the way home. Picked up a pizza for the boys and was tortured by the smell for the rest of the way home.
I got my gear together...it was 48 degrees so this made me happy! I only wore a pair of running pants and a long sleeve shirt. I was trying not to hate my husband who was drinking beer and eating pizza. I grabbed my garmin and ipod and was off...I just wanted to get this over with.
I always seem to forget that the trail by the Lake is colder; and I also forgot any water or Sports Beans. I had to pee in the woods at mile 3 and mile 5. I am not used to running that late! I had been drinking water all day. By mile 8 I.WAS.STARVING. but I had nothing to eat. I just keep chugging along, by this time I was freezing my ass off because it was dark and much colder.
By mile 11 I felt like I was going to puke, but kept moving along. I finally was done..yay!!!!!

Winter Training Sucks.....
So I had 10 miles on tap for this weekend. Lately, I've been all about doing my long run on Saturdays, so I can relax on Sundays. And I only had 3 light beers last night (I do have some control, who knew?) and I got up at 6:45 this morning to head out for my run.
IT.WAS.12.DEGREES. Man was it cold. I wore 2 pairs of running pants, 3 under armour shirts, jacket, gloves and a hat. I absolutely hate when I have to wear a jacket to run! I don't like to feel cramped. But it's done now so it's all good.

So I signed up for a 30k.....
because, well, it was on the weekend that I have to do an 18-miler for the Pittsburgh Marathon May 3rd. It makes sense to me, I think I would be more motivated if I had someone else to run with, plus I think that it will be a good indicator of whether I will be able to finish the Pittsburgh Marathon.
Thoughts from the seasoned runners out there? I don't plan on "racing". I'm not going to worry about the pace. I just want to go out there and do it.

The Mental Game
I think long distance running is all mental. Yeah, you need to be fit, but we can push our bodies so much more than what we do. I think it's more about breaking through the negative thoughts and just getting out there and doing it.
Last night, for instance, I had NINE beers, yes nine. Ridiculous, especially when I know I had to run 9 miles this morning! But they were going down too easily but it was fun at the time. But when I woke up this morning with that all too familiar head pain and dry mouth I was like "why did I do that"? I could have easily just went back to bed for another 3 hours. DH gave me the hairy eyeball when I asked him if we had sex last night...LMAO! Then he said, "thanks a lot, I was a stud too"!
But I got up and ran my 9 miles. It was actually a pretty good run, surprisingly!

Not much to say....
I haven't been in a blogging mood lately. Not really too much to say. I'm still training for the Pittsburgh Marathon, so far things are going well. Training hasn't been overwhelming yet, but I'm sure it will get harder.
I was sick for a week with strep throat so I didn't get my long run in last weekend. I felt that it would do more harm than good, so I didn't do it. Luckily, I am one week ahead of schedule so it shouldn't hurt me.
I did 5 miles yesterday on the dreadmill. I love running outside, but I cannot drag my ass out there at 4:45 in that weather, I just can't. I can do it on the weekends when it's later in the day, but that's it. It actually was a really good run. I ran an 8:34 for 3 miles and a 10:00 for the last 2.

Pittsburgh's Going to the Super Bowl!!!

And my man Troy had an insane game! He rocks.
Finally some good news after my shitty week!
We're excited to be going back to the Superbowl again. Me & Bobby may go to Tampa to watch the game since we have relatives there. We are not going to go to the Superbowl, but at least we can be there for the experience.
I got my long run in yesterday. I did 8 miles in a freaking blizzard! It was twice as hard as usual because of the snow. But I did it! For fucks sake, I live in Western Pennsylvania. If I am going to blame the elements on not getting out there, I'll never reach my goals.

Happy Fucking Birthday to Me!
yeah, I guess I'm a little bitter..LOL!
So we went to the Steeler game on Sunday for my birthday and got a room in Pittsburgh and had an AWESOME time. I'm so glad that we went because it will be our last hoorah for a while! We both took Monday off to spend the day together. My DH bought me a new Garmin Forerunner for Marathon Training, which was super sweet of him!
Then things proceeded to turn bad quickly. First, Brayden got really sick Monday which a high fever and vomiting. We decided that we were going to split a vacation day because he obviously couldn't go to daycare. I decide to stay home in the morning. DH goes to work and the whole department is gone! His boss, his bosses boss, the secretary, etc. We knew that Monday was D-Day and that there were going to be layoffs but were somewhat confident that he wasn't going to be one of them.
WRONG!!!!!! So that was the shocker for the day. I know that we will cope, we have been through this before with the same damn Corporation! I hate Corporate America. I wish he would open his own business, I'm tired of dealing with this shit.
I haven't run yet this week, but am hoping too tomorrow. I am just a little depressed right now and just don't feel like it. DH wants me to go ahead with the Marathon. I haven't registered for it yet (wanted to see how training went) but don't know if I should be spending $95 on a marathon right now, ya know? But I will probably end up doing it.

I can't believe
The difference in my long runs with my new running shoes. They rock! I don't have the hip, knee and joint pain that usually accompany my long runs.
Why didn't I get fitted long ago? Oh well, live and learn right?

She's gone!
Thank the baby Jesus!!!! My mother-in-law has been at our house since December 6. I was truly at the end of my rope. I gained 6 pounds while she was here. I tend to drink too much and stress eat when she's here!
But I am now focused and have a goal to work up to so I am not stressing about it too much. I know it will come off with a few weeks of good exercise and eating right.
I was so hoping I would not have to see her this morning, but when I went to put on the coffee there was a note for me to wake her up this morning before I left. Damn it! Wake yourself up FFS! Are you 10? But like the good little daughter-in-law I am, I woke her up, gave her a hug goodbye and left.
I am so happy to have my life and my house back!
I got up at 4:30 this morning and did P90X legs and back and will be running 3 miles at lunch. Back to the double workouts!
